Caring For Your Jewellery

Some simple advice to help you prolong the life of your jewellery:

  • Remove your jewellery when you shower, bathe or engage in heavy exercise, particularly when swimming in the sea or a chlorinated swimming pool.

  • Put your jewellery on last when dressing. Hairspray, perfume and body sprays can cause your silver jewellery to tarnish

  • Keep your jewellery away from extreme temperatures, humidity or sunlight.

  • Avoid wearing your jewellery when using bleach, cleaning products and other chemicals.

  • Be cautious of knocks and bumps to avoid dislodging stones or creating scratches

  • Silver polish cloths can be used to remove tarnish and bring back the shine to silver jewellery. They are easily available online or in supermarkets. To help, we will include a keep me sparkling cloth with every order containing silver jewellery. Our polishing cloth is not suitable for gold or rose gold plated jewellery.

  • To clean gold plated jewellery, we recommend using a plain, untreated, soft cloth to gently restore the shine to the jewellery. Do not use a treated cloth as this could cause damage to the plating

  • We advise against using silver dips as they contain harsh chemicals.

Storing your Jewellery

  • Clean your jewellery with a polish cloth before putting away

  • Ideally store your pieces of jewellery separately, so that they don't rub together or become tangled.

  • It is best to store your jewellery in a dry place such as a jewellery box

  • Please note we do not recommend using our packaging box for long-term storage.

  • We recommend storing same metals together – mixing your metals in your jewellery box can lead to tarnish

Cleaning Semi-precious Stones or Crystals

  • Avoid hot water, harsh chemicals and cleaners at all times

  • Clean with a clean, soft, damp cloth after wearing.

  • Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean semi-precious stones as they can cause scratching.

What Causes Tarnish?

  • Tarnish is a natural occurrence as the metal reacts to the environment

  • Exposure to soaps, perfumes, lotions & oils, chlorine and cleaning chemicals

  • Oxidising through prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in non-airtight containers

  • Contact with water for long periods of time

  • Exposure to toxins or chemicals released from the skin through sweat

How to Clean and Store Gold Plated Jewellery

  • Use a cotton ball or soft cloth (such as a cloth designed to clean glasses or camera lenses) and gently rub your piece to remove dust and dirt. Do not use a solid gold polishing cloth as this may strip away the plating.

  • Gentle wet wipes can also be used.

  • Stay away from jewellery cleaners and antibacterial soaps which may tarnish your pieces prematurely.  Instead, a combination of basic soap and warm water can be used to soak plated pieces for a few minutes then patted dry with a soft cloth to restore shine.

  • Storing like items together – different metals may react and cause each other to tarnish, fade or change colours. Keep your gold and silver jewellery separate by having different storage spaces for different colours of metals.

  • Ensure your pieces are stored in dry areas and kept in a jewellery box or on display in a space that won’t allow the pieces to be scratched or exposed to chemicals.

How to Clean and Store Silver 925 Jewellery

  • Silver jewellery can easily regain its shine with a silver polish. Using a non-abrasive cloth free of lint or dust, polish along the jewellery rather than in circles to avoid making any scratches more prominent.

  • Don’t use paper towels or tissue for polishing as they can scratch silver.

  • If you don’t want to buy silver polish, combine baking soda and water into a paste, dabbing it in small dots on the jewellery and polishing it with a clean cloth in the same circular motions. If this doesn’t do the trick, soak the jewellery for a couple of hours in a mix of two tablespoons of baking soda in half a cup of vinegar. Clean off with warm water and your jewellery should look good as new.

  • While 925 silver jewellery might tarnish easily, it also stays shiny if you store it correctly. One of the best ways to preserve your jewellery is also the most fun: wearing it! The oils on your skin keep the silver looking polished, giving it natural protection from oxidation. Don’t wear it while you’re using lotions, aerosols like hair spray, and cosmetics, as they can increase oxidation and tarnishing.

  • When you’re not wearing it, keep the jewellery out of the sunlight and in a place with low humidity. Putting it in an airtight bag is the best way to keep it looking great. Add a silica pack, some chalk, or activated charcoal to the bag to suck more of the moisture out of the air in the bag or box you’re keeping it in.
